i agree. as a reactive strategy, 3 CBs is a hail mary. without the protection of the full backs, they've really got to know what they're doing which is unlikely to be the case.

i'm aware of that book, but haven't read it yet. if it didn't come directly from it, i think it's at least responsible for inspiring something i read about symmetry in systems. years ago it was common to load up your players where they were best employed with little regard to balancing the side between the left and right. the evolution of formations is fascinating in itself.

if we can stop our right flank from being overly exposed, and i think NRC in a 4-2-3-1 would do that, i'd be very keen to see more of what we've already seen a few glimpses of... namely ash and downing working the left together, supported by milner. why not? instead of letting our opponents cancel someone like ash out by double and triple teaming him, let's double and triple team their full back!! deal with that!! lol

I'd try and avoid going 3 at the back except when we really need to throw men forwards, since the way wingers play nowadays has pretty much cancelled out it's effectiveness (see Jonathan Wilson's brilliant book on tactics, 'Inverting the pyramid'). But some kind of 433/4231 would bring the best out of many of our players. unfortunately I don't think tinkering with tactics is really O'Neill's style. He might change the main template every now & then, but he doesn't tinker much, he's from the old school of picking your best (favourite?) eleven. Which admittedly has worked pretty well so far!

RVN... I wouldnt turn him down! But I think I'd rather give Delfouneso more chances up til the end of the season - if he's not up to it we can then bring in an established striker (or at least a backup/alternative for Gabby) in summer methinks. At the moment, we only really have 3 strikers (that's including Delfouneso) since Heskey & Carew are virtually never on the pitch at the same time!

i personally like the look of 4-2-3-1 with reo/delph and stan as holding midfielders, then milner, downing & young could alternate, would devastating on the counter attack.

hopefully with ruud van nistelrooy up front!
