it's a shame that it still needs saying now and again, sam. i've rooted around the odd forum since i wrote this and the overwhelming majority seem to reject the story completely, which is reassuring.

the problem with the minority that this stuff will resonate with is that they're pretty vocal. as you suggest, that kind of unrest can be contagious, no matter how irrational it might be. mob mentality and a few beers, the next thing you know they're booing the team after the first game of the season.... oh, no, sorry, they were booing the ref. my bad, of course they were!! when you're on the pitch, you can appreciate that subtle difference of course!!

I love this, thanks Dan for reminding me of why i am glad Randy is on board. Too many people take great delight in trying to diminish the man's commitment, and the red tops circle like flies round an half eaten egg roll.
They peddle their crap influencing some of the morons who unfortunately call themselves supporters of our wonderful club. They then go on to regurgitate it on their crap blogs and the cycle starts again.
Thank god some of us more discerning supporters see what is the truth, i smile everytime i hear Randy Lerners name echo round the stands of Villa Park. Not many owners have that privilege in these dark and distrusting times, but rest assured it is only the mindless minority who choose to mock!

thanks again for the positive feedback, Stewart. you'll make me blush, people might think i'm writing my own reviews!!. now, where do i send that $20? ;)

i think we discussed before that the way aston villa is conducting itself is winning new fans all around the world and especially so in what i believe to be a very important market; america. that was certainly the case for you and i know you're far from alone there.

i hear similar stories from fans here in north america, south america, australia, asia and even back in europe. as a villa fan of many years, this fills me with pride because the aston villa of just 4 years ago would not stir such affection from potential new fans.

most importantly, the revenue the new fans around the world will create in tv packages and merchandise purchases will help fund the acquisition of future players that the fans back in brum will have the privilege to see run out on the VP turf in claret and blue. i hope that fact isn't lost on them!!

as for this type of tabloid nonsense, it's best treated with the contempt it deserves by simply ignoring it. however, i'll have to focus on the odd silly story now and again just to highlight the modus operandi of the tabloid media, especially if there are other blogs out there holding such nonsense up as something worth paying attention to. it isn't and they know that.

in this case, at least it allowed me to re-discover some old words from randy lerner. personally, i can't see anything that randy has or hasn't done in the last 3 1/2 years that would cause me to doubt a single word in that quote, but then some people will never be satisfied i suspect.

a trophy on sunday might go someway towards that goal though!! :) you're right about the wembelieve mini-site, it's a great little idea and i'm glad everyone is having the opportunity to share their excitement ahead of the final.

Thanks again, Dan, for cutting through so much garbage and providing reasoned and thoughtful analysis. I have always thought that one of the great joys of following Villa and the EPL from America is that I don't have much exposure to tabloid news about the game, or to media coverage in general, blogging, barroom blather, scandal-mongering, etc. You commented in a previous e-mail to me that "some Villa fans are not happy unless they are unhappy," and I think some of this illustrates your point well. One the reasons I became a Villa fan was the philosophy and values of Randy Lerner; but I know that just being an American means he will always be under cynical scrutiny, and, the more Villa flirts with greater success, the more imaginative and vicious will be the "journalism" questioning his motives. All, of course, citing unnamed, highly placed sources.

Once again, I am grateful for Astonvillacentral.com, and know that I will always find a perceptive game reviews. This is obviously helpful if I did not see the game. But it is equally so if I did; my understanding of the subtleties of soccer is limited, and I appreciate those who write about it with obvious sympathy for Aston Villa, but with insight and a commitment to accuracy rather than pandering to pure partisanship, or simply trying to be more snide or clever than the competition.

I have looked at the videos people have sent in to the official team site in anticipation of Wembley, and enjoyed these immensely. Fortunately, there seem to be a lot of fans who just want the team of their lifelong devotion to win, and don't need to look for reasons to expect the worst and be cynical. I certainly hope for their sake it is the Manchester press that is wringing its hands next week.
