Statshack – Chelsea 7 Aston Villa 1

No narrative from me this time, what can you really say to provide any kind of worthwhile analysis? It was a freak result that doesn’t reflect our part in proceedings? Don’t believe me? Compare the numbers below with the statistics from the 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Villa Park back in October.

I guess sometimes it’s a really fine line between a great victory and a humiliating drubbing.

Incidentally, apart from Luke Young in at right back in place of Carlos Cuellar, it was the same starting eleven. Not that I’m saying that was even close to being the reason for the battering, but in a way I’m actually glad that Cuellar didn’t play because that would surely have been the root course for a lot of people.

(The average position map isn’t available at the moment, I’ll update this post when it is).

    Let the healing begin.

I had the good fortune to watch on low-def, Turkish feed on a small screen – don’t know that I could have taken it in high definition majesty. Also glad I didn’t go to the bar and watch with all the Chelsea fans.

It does seem like an anomaly, a freakish outlier that cannot be evaluated in normal terms. I don’t blame you for not trying.

I appreciate what Collins said – he should be embarrassed, and so should most of his teammates. Just as Ashley Young was the man of the match last week, I thought he was the best again today, although obviously the bar was set very low.

freak is the word. it *was* a freak result, but if only it were so simple to dismiss.

however, that’s what we must do. we’re still in a decent position, we have to remain positive and push on. perhaps this will serve as some kind of motivation.

chelsea benefited from some exceptional finishing, but my biggest concern is just how badly the back four were pulled around. 6’s and 7’s, as they say, at times. they looked far from the best in the league.
