That’s it then, the curtain has fallen on the 2009/10 Premiership season and it was a disappointing finale for us in fairness, losing 1-0 at home to a Blackburn side who weren’t in the game at all during the first half.  In the end, the result didn’t matter as Liverpool were held to a goalless draw in Hull, so we couldn’t be passed for sixth place.  City were also held to a 1-1 at West Ham, so a win wouldn’t have lifted us to 5th, but it would have been nice to have at least been level on points.

So sixth it is.  3 seasons on the bounce now, but the record each season has been an improvement on the previous season.  This year we finished with 64 points, only 1992/93 was better.  The 5 teams ahead of us just did better over 38 games.  The top three today were in particularly ruthless mood racking up 16 goals between them, Chelsea with 8 against a 10 man Wigan side and thoroughly deserve the title.

I’m sure no one is particularly interested, but just to cap the season I’ll post a Statshack and more detailed analysis of the game a little later.

Overall, despite some frustrating disappointments here and there, it’s been a marvelous season and I can’t wait to see 2010/11 kick off in August.  Thanks to Martin O’Neill and everyone at Villa for continuing the redevelopment for another season and thanks to everyone who stops by Aston Villa Central and helped make the site a success.  Here’s to another great year next season!!

Agreed Dan, it’s certainly been better than some would have us believe.

If only we could have turned the likes of the Sunderland and Wolves games into wins.

    Ah well.

as much as i hate to do so, you have to give redknapp credit for what he’s achieved, especially given that spurs weren’t in great shape when he took over.

but that doesn’t detract from MON’s achievement whatsoever. he’s delivered the best performance by a villa side in the league for 17 years. redknapp has just done a wee bit better, that is all.

the missed opportunities lead us to think that we could have done better, but we have no shortage of wins that probably left our competitors feeling the same way.

Thank you for providing the definitive narrative to the season. I look for better things next year, and there is reason to hope for them.

Finishing ahead of Liverpool is satisfying – helping to break the power of the big four, and eases the pain of that bizarre 1-0 added time loss to them in December. For games I am not able to see, your analysis tells me what I need to know.

I trust you will continue to report through the summer. I think it helps to grow the brand. Although blessedly distant from the British football press here in Maryland, I look forward to the day when I am not the only one wearing claret and blue among all those Arsenal and Chelsea shirts.

thank you once again and, yes, i’ll be keeping things ticking over here during the summer, but since i’ve little interest in the endless transfer speculation, the content will be reduced.

i’ll also be writing elsewhere during the world cup, but i’ll drop the odd link here.
