Gerard Houllier has finally been confirmed as new permanent manager at Aston Villa, succeeding Martin O’Neill. He has resigned from his position of technical director at FFF.

I’ve put together a mini-biography here and compiled his Premier League statistics while at Liverpool here for anyone who is interested.

Gerard Houllier
I am very happy and proud to join this great and historic club. It was a very difficult decision for me to leave the FFF [French Football Federation] but I could not turn down the opportunity to manage a club whose approach, both on and off the pitch, I have long admired.

Aston Villa is one of England’s biggest clubs and has an amazing set of fans. This is a tremendous challenge and one I am very much looking forward to taking on.

I may be going against the majority here but i think of all the possible candidates that were available, this is the one i hoped we did not get, apart from Sven obviously.
Yes he had a decent record at the Pool, but seriously, that was six years ago, what’s more the guy is 63 and has a heart problem.
I am proud of the fact that we have a core of British players and i fear that a sudden influx of foreign players will destroy this.
Also what sort of message is a two year contract sending out? Mate i fear for my beloved Villa, i hope i am wrong.

i’m surprised you dismiss his record so easily, that’s all i can base my opinion on and he was the clear front runner on that basis for me.

he was out of club management for 10 years before he joined liverpool, but he won the french league with lyon just 3 years ago. i don’t see the problem, he’s hardly been sat watching trisha in the meantime anyhoo.

i think the contract is more likely to be 3 years, but we wait and see.. MON was on 12 months rolling, so either way, you’ll have to tell me the message it sends out, i really don’t see an issue.

is 63 that old? i mean, what do we expect from him? 3 years? 4, 5 6 years? he’d be 69 if he gave us 6 years, we had 4 years from MON. SAF is 69 in december. bobby robson was 65 when he went back to newcastle, 70 when he packed it in i think.

he *had* a heart condition, an aortic dissection to be precise. prognosis fine so far as i’m aware, but he could drop down tomorrow i suppose, he could get hit by a bus next week too, what you gonna do?

not convinced we’ll be seeing much of an influx of anyone, foreign or otherwise, working with what we’ve built over the last 4 years was a stated requirement.

so, all that out of the way, we come back to record…. of the candidates, surely his experience and achievements put him head and shoulders above the others?

read the little biog i put together, under the circumstances, i think we’ve got the best man, but there’s no guarantees whoever we bring in.
