You won’t have needed to be too eagle eyed to have noticed the EA Sports logo on screen when you’ve been watching the Premier League this season, especially when any statistics have been presented.

EA Sports have taken over from Actim as the official stats provider and that includes what was the Actim Top 100 Index, which has been a regular monthly(ish) feature here at Aston Villa Central.

Although the Actim system was proprietary and they didn’t divulge exactly what was measured and how, we did have a decent overview. At this stage I’m not sure whether EA Sports have acquired that same system, whether it’s still produced by Actim and licensed or EA have developed their own, but since it’s currently throwing the names to the top of the list I would expect, I’m going to assume it’s at least very similar, if not identical.

On that basis, following the same format as last season, we currently have eight players in the EA Sports Index:-

  • 8th Ashley Young – 108 points
  • 12th Stewart Downing – 105 points
  • 38th Stiliyan Petrov – 80 points
  • 42nd Brad Friedel – 79 points
  • 48th Marc Albrighton – 76 points
  • 50th Luke Young – 75 points
  • 59th Stephen Warnock – 71 points
  • 94th James Collins – 58 points

And those eight players rank highly enough to place us 4th in the overall table, which you shouldn’t be surprised to find is dominated by Chelsea:-

Team Number of Players Avg. Score
Chelsea 11 94.27
Man Utd 9 89.44
Arsenal 9 77.56
Aston Villa 8 81.50
Man City 8 79.50
Birmingham 8 71.38
Newcastle 6 79.33
West Brom 6 79.00
Blackpool 6 67.67
Bolton 6 66.17
Blackburn 5 71.40
Liverpool 4 66.00
Fulham 3 74.33
Stoke 3 69.67
Tottenham 2 80.50
West Ham 2 66.00
Sunderland 1 83.00
Wigan 1 62.00
Everton 0 0.00
Wolverhampton 0 0.00

Very interesting. Of course statistics like this never tell the whole story, but it is nice to see us ranked so highly. If I understand the ranking table, it is an attempt to say which team has the “best players”. If we are ranked that high with players performing that well despite the management changes and general uncertainty, it says that all we need is a bit of organization to be at least challenging for Champions League again this year.

I’m hopeful, but I also understand that stats and rankings are just numbers if they don’t translate into wins.

yeah, that’s more or less it.

in the past, the perception was that we ranked pretty highly because MON didn’t rotate, giving the players greater opportunity to score – it’s a cumulative thing, not averaged – and there was certainly a part of that.

but my view is that the cream will always rise to the top and this is one of many measures to see if we’re sinking or swimming.

      so far, so good.

Let me get this right, Petrov is the 38th ranked player in the league?

after being strangely overlooked when he was playing at his best.

Good grief, I never noticed that!
I know they’re not measuring the headline grabbing stuff, but I’d have put Albrighton above Petrov myself, at least impact-wise.
Having criticised Petrov of late (although liking him overall), surely that proves he must be doing a lot that we sometimes just don’t notice?

it’s still early of course, it’s only based on 6 games, but in recent seasons i’ve looked to stan’s lack of goals and assists to explain his absence from the index.

strange now that he still has none, but albrighton has 2 or 3 assists, depending where you look, and is behind.

then again, stan has played 45 more minutes than albrighton in the league, which, if nothing else, is an opportunity to rack up more points.

i was going to point out that the actim index was a measure of contribution to winning and marc wasn’t on the pitch when heskey scored the winner at wolves… then i remembered, neither was stan.

who knows? i think we’ll get a truer measure as the season progresses, which is another reason why i tend to only look at this monthly.
