I was one of a number of people to Re-Tweet this little gem before the kick off at Upton Park last weekend:
I noticed one or two people copy & pasting the contents, including both hashtags, to pass it off as their own (which is pretty lame), but I believe @Jacko442 is the originator.
By the final whistle, Bent had added to his tally and had another one chalked off for a foul only the referee saw. (You can add that to the one incorrectly discounted for an offside recently).
As for Caroll, Suarez, Torres and Dzeko… well, erm, not so much.
Of course, we don’t need stats and graphs to know whether Darren Bent was good value, but I thought it might be interesting to look at the five high profile moves from January in more detail anyway. You know, just for fun.
The data in the image below covers the period each player has been at their new club up until last Sunday, April 17th. Fernando Torres got 23 minutes at the end of Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Birmingham City last night, but with only one offside, a foul and five passes to show for it, I thought it cruel to re-work the data to include that extra game.
Well, okay, I couldn’t be bothered, most of the work had already been done and it’s hardly worth the effort, now is it?
You can click on the image below to enlarge with a lightbox, the quality of which will depend on the size of your screen.
So, any questions?
Actually, I’ve got a question… who was it who said it was an act of desperation again?
EDIT: I’ve just discovered that I’ve done Edin Dzeko a bit of a disservice here by managing to exclude six European and FA Cup games where he bagged four goals – this was supposed to be a fair comparison across all competitions.
The reason for the error was a database problem at ESPN where Dzeko apparently has two records:

I’ll rework the data at some point when I get some time, but it looks like his four goals and extra games comes out at a goal every 258 minutes. (btw, Bent’s goal against Stoke takes him to a goal every 148 minutes now!)

Aston Villa News 24/7

lol bargain of the january window i say
Going very well isn’t he?
Let’s hope he gets the 10 goals I was hoping for.
And becomes the 20 a season bloke we’ve missed for so long.
this started life last week as something different, which i might still use, but the basic premise was that he absolutely could bag more than 20 next season.
he could make it to ten this season for us, but the officials aren’t helping; he should have eight already, not six!
Ah, I’d got it in my head it was 8 and was wondering why.
No doubt I read it on the net somewhere.
I like Bent, he just does what it says on the tin, ie scores goals.
And with our good wing play, he’s ideally suited, I feel.
All credit to Houllier for this one, it’s been a great signing up till now.
Bent ROCKS!!!!!
The only stat that is somewhat poor is his assist record. Think what he could do if we can pair him with someone other than Heskey or Ashley Young. With a real second striking threat Bent would not only get more assists but I would think his goal count would go up due to the dual threat!
true.
where he can also help others score though, is not so much with delivering the final ball, it’s pulling defenders away to provide space.
unfortunately, there’s no stat for that. he’s very good at it though.
Oh God, ‘provide space’ are we entering Heskeyworld?
Right, Villa, I have a new ‘super conbected’ very big TV and I’d like to see some Claret n Blue glory that pins me to the lounge wall.
heheh, cliche spotter’s badge for you!
hang on, i’ve been done… heskey “links up play”!
on a serious note, bent actually does drag people around, heskey plays with his back to goal & falls over a bit. they are a wee bit different.
I would be keen to see the stas on the total value of all transfers for those guys. Bent will always score no matter what team he is at not sure if he can justify the £35m price tag though. I Found another Infographic just on Torres http://www.detailed-reviews.com/fernando-torres-infographic-1847306/
i like that one.
Yep. Don’t think I can even attempt to win that argument Dan.
