Aston Villa have 8 players in the Actim Top 100 Index this week, second only to Chelsea, with Gabby Agbonlahor leading the way in 3rd place with 475 points.

Focusing on Gabby for a moment; he may well be the embodiment of the Aston Villa style efficiency I’ve been discussing a lot recently. Wayne Rooney tops the goal scoring charts with 21 Premiership goals this term, but if he had Gabby’s goal per shot ratio he’d actually have 31!!

Wayne Rooney has made 149 shots with 46 (30.87%) on target. As I mentioned, those 149 shots have resulted in 21 goals, which is a 14.09% return.

By contrast, Gabby has made a paltry 53 shots with 28 (52.83%) on target, but his 11 goals means he scores with 20.75% of his shots. On this evidence, if we could get him the ball and get him shooting more often, we already have our 20 goal a season striker!

Both strikers have turned provider 3 times each, but there’s a noticeable difference in the number of fouls committed and earned, which might be indicative of the different styles of play. Gabby has committed 42, but won 48 fouls, while Wayne Rooney has only committed 19 and won just 25.

  • 3rd Gabriel Agbonlahor – 475 points
  • 12th Richard Dunne – 397 points
  • 15th Carlos Cuellar – 381 points
  • 16th James Milner – 376 points
  • 18th Ashley Young – 370 points
  • 31st Brad Friedel – 331 points
  • 68th Stiliyan Petrov – 264 points
  • 69th James Collins – 264 points

Unsurprisingly, Portsmouth are propping up another table and it’s not looking very good for them. I just hope they can stay alive, at least until the end of the season.

    Great Stuff.

Agree what you said about Gabby, he has been playing brilliantly lately despite not scoring many goals.

I feel he is doing Heskey's job by holding the ball up and passing it to the wings, it's like he's up there on his own. I think his striker partner is a key factor in how many goals he scores, if we can get a real good partner for him he would definatly score more goals.

yeah, he plays with his back to goal a lot these days, hence the comparatively high foul numbers i think, which might be a little odd for a player who's main weapon is pace. still, he doesn't have the level of ability that rooney has to drop deep, pick the ball and run at defenders more often and if we hit balls over the top for him to chase we'll be labelled a long-ball team, so what you gonna do?

“if we hit balls over the top for him to chase we'll be labelled a long-ball team, so what you gonna do?”

you hit the balls over the top for him to run onto till he learns how to play like rooney!…who gives a fuck what others make of how we play as long as we win right?
