James Milner Wins PFA Young Player of the Year 2010

Congratulations to James Milner who has just been named as the PFA Young Player of the Year for 2010.

As you’ll recall from when the nomination was announced, James joins Andy Gray, Gary Shaw and Ashley Young as players who have won this award while at Aston Villa.

Congratulations are also in order for Richard Dunne who joined James in the PFA’s Premier League Team of the Year.

Well done to both players. Richly deserved recognition for key players who will hopefully have even better seasons in claret and blue next season.

Wayne Rooney won the PFA Player of the Year Award.

PFA Premier League XI: Hart; Ivanovic, Dunne, Vermaelen, Evra; Valencia, Fabregas, Fletcher, Milner; Rooney, Drogba

he’s incredibly hard working and super professional. with little good fortune he could have a good world cup and become a superstar for us.

didn’t realise being 24 counts as young! Good player that he is, and odd decision for this award!

yeah, the rule is being 23 or less at the start of the season in question. both rooney and milner qualified.

I’d guess it was close between James and Fabgregas, but I read an article this morning that said the PFA had been keeping an eye on Milner since he asked for advice as a teenager. He’s also involved in some players/managers group.
I suspect that might have helped swing it, but who cares?
My understanding is Milner is an great professional and hard working so I’m chuffed for the kid.

I have to agree with Tom though.
I’d hardly call 24 young for a footballer, even if those are the rules.

yes, milner is a rare example of player who doesn’t have an agent; he’s represented by the PFA. or at least he was up until the last i heard on the subject which is when he re-joined us.

that may have changed, but i see no reason why it would have. i think he’s scheduled for contract talks after the world cup, which is smart on his part.

i think i’m right in saying that 23 is also the upper limit for olympic squads, aside from the players – 4 i think – who are excluded from the rule.

defining who is 23 works on the same basis i think, as with all age groups – milner was playing in the under 21s when he was 22 for instance.

i’d agree that 23 seems old, perhaps 21 being better. then again, players under 21 breaking through and playing consistently at the top level are relatively rare.

giggs and scholes make them all look genuinely young anyway! ;)
