I’ll just leave this here…

Rejected.

Oh, while I think about it…. Gareth Barry… £12m? I guess this confirms what we already knew…  he’s just a poor man’s James Milner!

Who was it that said he was a waste of money at £12million again?

someone who should stick to what they’re good at – parroting negative tabloid rumours – because expressing an opinion frequently betrays their lack of real knowledge and understanding of the game?

Oh dear, have you been banned too, Keef?

    Ha :-)

Sticking to the point though, I have a bad feeling he’ll go if the price is right.
No doubt he’s already been sounded out and this is why he won’t discuss a new contract yet.
The worrying thing is I suspect MON and RL know all about it too, even before the derisory £20mill bid (£22mill for Lescott???).

I agree with you, I don’t want him to go at all, but if he says he wants to go, I don’t see what can be done.

I’d like to think he’s happy and settled at Villa, but who can turn down the idea of doubling your wages?
I’d guess a fair bit will depend on how much ambition we show during the window.

    Sh*t, he’s gone then :-(

In which case we should take them to the cleaners, same as Everton did.

    £25mill and Ireland or similar.

my reply got lengthy – you frequently getting me thinking more – so i’ll turn it into a post i think.

bottom line: nothing will happen this side of the world cup. i’m not sure he’ll go and i’m not sure they’ll want him enough to make us an offer we have to accept anyway.

I reckon after the world cup Milner’s price tag will explode once they see his work rate.
Also do we want to be supporting a feeder club to the top 4 and therefore never enjoying the success we so richly deserve?

“Also do we want to be supporting a feeder club to the top 4 and therefore never enjoying the success we so richly deserve?”

Obviously not, but what’s the option when Citeh can double his money?

I really don’t think you can look negatively on the club if he does go.
We’d be foolish to force him to stay imo.
Look at Barry, we could have got £17-18mill for him but refused it, hence it cost us upto £6mill to keep a player who most would agree wasn’t at the top of his game in his last season for us.

All we can do is get the absolute best possible price/deal and hope MON finds another couple of gems to further improve the team.

      • Dan 20 May 2010 at 10:02 pm #

that £6m was money well spend IMO. you’re right that we didn’t get the best season from barry that we’ve ever seen, but it was massively symbolic that we held off liverpool in the manner we did.

£18m was probably over the top, £12m with a year on his contract was still a decent whack.

          You make a good point.
But Pool couldn’t offer higher wages in the way that Citeh can, which is what will make the difference.
          And that’s bloody annoying.
Even if Milner has all what we’d like to think are the right instincts, you can imagine what his advisors will be telling him.

          That said, I forgot.
He’s being advised by the PFA or something isn’t he?

I can’t see them saying anything other than “take the money before the footballing world wises up” though.

At least, that’s what I’d be saying, in all honesty.

One bonus about this affair is that Villa refused a sell on clause when we bought him from Newcastle.
    Good business.

The downside is, we still owe the barcodes £4mill.

    • Dan 20 May 2010 at 9:47 pm #

that’s why he was £12m then. no vision those geordies! ;)

      • Badger 20 May 2010 at 11:20 pm #

        Agree.

        But it begs a question.

If that’s how we’ve been working (I probably naively assumed we paid up front), how much has actually been paid out and how much is still owed to other clubs?

The books look even more unclear now?????

        • Dan 21 May 2010 at 1:17 am #

i don’t think any deal is straightforward these days and none are when it comes to how it’s accounted on the balance sheet.

that’s why i find it laughable that the manager has much to do with that side of things when we’re trying to bring a new player to the club.

i know MON was studying to be a lawyer before football, but i’ve not heard anything about accountancy!

on your other comment: you’re right about the PFA advising miner, or least i haven’t heard anything to the contrary. i think the major difference with any advise they offer is it won’t be motivated by what their cut will be as might be the case with a regular agent.
