Ashley Young and Darren Bent scored both goals for England in a 2-1 victory over Denmark in Copenhagen tonight. It capped a pretty decent performance from England despite conceding an early Daniel Agger goal.
It was Ash’s first goal for England, winning his 12th cap, and Bent’s 2nd goal in what was amazingly only his 8th appearance for the national side. I think they’ll be in Capello’s plans again next time.
Bent played the full 90 minutes and might have scored more, particularly a point blank header from a fine delivery from Young. Ash played the 2nd 45 minutes and looked lively throughout, taking his goal particularly well with a stabbed effort to the near post. Stewart Downing played the final 20 minutes.
With James Milner, Gareth Barry, Gary Cahill also on the field, plus Thomas Sorenson in goal for Denmark, there was definitely a strong Villa flavour to the night. Rumours that Umbro are considering providing claret and blue shirts for the next England game are unfounded though.
Elsewhere, Jean Makoun withdrew from Cameroon’s friendly in Macedonia, his side won 1-0. It was just a precaution and he’ll be available for Blackpool at the weekend.
Barry Bannan came on in place of Blackpool’s Charlie Adam for the last half hour of Scotland’s 3-0 win over Northern Ireland.
Marc Albrighton and Nathan Delfouneso both started for England Under-21s in a disappointing 1-0 loss to Italy yesterday. Marc played the full game and pulled out some nice tricks, Delfouneso played on the left of an England side that struggled to really threaten the Italian goal. The game was gifted to the hosts late on via the penalty spot.
And finally, Eric Lichaj has joined the long list of players heading out on loan, he’ll be linking up with Leeds tomorrow for at least a month. A good move for the young American and after loan moves to Leyton Orient and Lincoln last season, when he gets his debut for Leeds, possibly against Bristol City at the weekend, he will have played at all four professional levels in England.

Aston Villa News 24/7

When wax the last time this happened? Two Villa players scoring for England.
haven’t a clue.
i had a quick look at http://www.englandstats.com/index.php and couldn’t find a way of extracting anything useful. so i’ve concluded that it’s never happened before.
Hmmm, someone claiming Barry and the Mule, just before he signed for City. Is this true?
Great to see Ash score for England. That has to give him some confidence. Do you think Capello likes the fact that Ash, Downing and Bent all practice together daily?
I’m also happy for Lichaj. He needs playing time and at a higher level than Lincoln.
Lichaj to Lincoln…Leyton…Leeds… hmmmm, should we worry abot losing him to Liverpool this summer?
final thought… noooo!!!
although, he’ll probably be one of the few connected to villa pleased to hear that we don’t have any option to buy kyle walker permanently at the end of the season.
