Oops! We’ve got an early peek at the new Aston Villa home shirt for the 2011/12 season thanks to a slight SNAFU on the JJB Sports website and… it’s… checked!

There had been strong whispers that the check motif would be a feature again this year, but it’s actually a two-toned effect in the body rather than the claret and blue check trim found on both the home and away 2010/11 shirts.

Other than that, it’s a claret shirt with blue sleeves and a return to the round neck. There’s really only so much you can do that’s a change from the previous season without being too radical. Although I’ve a feeling this may just be a touch too radical for some tastes.

Obviously these pictures were created before the FxPro deal was cancelled, hopefully any deal to replace them is done quickly to avoid the production problems we suffered last season.

So, what do you think?

UPDATE: JJB have removed items from their website and the club have issued the following statement:

John Greenfield, Head of Merchandising
The kit design is still being finalised and, while a prototype of the new kit has begun to be circulated, I would like to emphasise that it is not the finished product.

We look forward to finalising everything over coming weeks and we will keep our fans updated when we have further details and confirmation of the official launch and on-sale dates.

UPDATE 2: The Birmingham Mail has another quote from John Greenfield as the club look to cast doubt on the likelihood of this image being close to the final product:

John Greenfield, Head of Merchandising
It’s an early prototype and Nike have since made extensive changes to satisfy our needs. We have been in contact with Nike with regards to where JJB got this information from and an inquiry is taking place.

    its a fake 100%.

    • marshallavfc 4 May 2011 at 8:02 am #

How can it be fake, for one JJB have already got into some issues leaking it, if it is the real kit but their are in more becuase
they showed that image to everybody who pre-ordered it then gave them something completely different by the time deliveries came about and also they made up a shirt and leaked it as the official villa shirt.

I thought the FXpro deal was ending at the end of the season?

  6. notsosilentbob 4 May 2011 at 1:43 pm #

Club have announced that the one circulating is a prototype.

It’s been leaked by marketing to gage reactions from fans to see if it will go down well. (IMO)

i think focus groups would be the preferred method of soliciting feedback and, if it happens at all, it wouldn’t be two months before launch!

obviously the sponsor will be different, there may be a tweak or two, but this is pretty much what you’ll see in july. if i were a gambling man, i’d put money on it.

that’s just a fans mock up using a readily available template file.

  9. Mike 4 May 2011 at 5:22 pm #

Its utterly awful, though the ‘Coco the Clown look’is certainly appropriate given this seasons performances.

while I am on which lunatic made our one European star seem to be coming out of the lions hand ? All teams have them on top of the badge, it totally negates the achievement.

Do we use a design team for our kit or is it the directors children that come up with this stuff ?

    Mike

    • Dan 4 May 2011 at 6:03 pm #

bit odd complaining about a badge that’s four years old, but since you mention it… we’re one of the few to actually incorporate the star into the badge itself. most of the others add stars to the shirt, generally above the badge, as you say.

in computer terms, you’d probably call that “scalability”. in our case, we’d have to redesign the badge if we ever won it again. no immediate danger of that happening.

Can somebody leak a picture of the Villa team for next season. I’d settle for them playing in leather gimp suits, if they didn’t let in goals and stopped Petrov from shooting.

    • villa82 8 May 2011 at 6:39 pm #

Go back to damiens gay blog you ugly nan.

  11. Badger 4 May 2011 at 10:08 pm #

    I like it Nan :-)

At least it looks like it might be a Nike shirt.
Not keen on that Makron outfit that’s been touted.

As for the shirt, I agree with notsosilentbob in that it’s a marketing thing to gauge our opinions.

The shirt doesn’t look too bad to me.
At least it’s better than the last one.
I’m not sure either way about the checks though.
I’d have to see it in the flesh, because pics are notoriously unreal.
Going by the pics, I’d prefer the checks to be way more subtle.

  12. Max 5 May 2011 at 6:43 am #

    Jesus, that’s terrible.

Too much emphasis on the checks and they clash with the crest outline on the sleeves. Then on top of the checks you have another crest outline, just far to much stuff going on.

That fan made one posted is much nicer.

  13. Max 5 May 2011 at 6:49 am #

actually is the crest outline in fact a water mark?

    haha

    • Dan 5 May 2011 at 12:38 pm #

ah yes. sorry, that was my fault, i masked the watermark to only appear on the shirt images and not the background. with hindsight, probably not the best idea, but i was in a bit of a rush at the time.

personally, i don’t really like sticking watermarks on as i didn’t create the original images, like everyone else i, er, “borrowed” them from JJB. but i did do a bit of work here in seeking out the high res versions and presenting them in this way. it’s a bit galling to have those images further stolen and passed of as someone else’s work.

  14. notsosilentbob 5 May 2011 at 9:10 am #

Personally i would prefer the check design to be striped.
2 shades of claret with no blue sleeves etc.

    • Dan 5 May 2011 at 12:42 pm #

      that’s an interesting idea.

i have to say, from a design perspective, working with our claret and blue is quite challenging.

it would be easier if we were supplied by adidas where you could create a basic claret shirt and then the usual adidas trim, the 3 stripes for instance, could be in blue.

on second thoughts, that might look a little too much like the colorado rapids tbh.

  15. notsosilentbob 5 May 2011 at 2:09 pm #

and why not the rapids shirt is pretty nice

    • Dan 5 May 2011 at 2:30 pm #

true. we’ve had just about every manufacturer except adidas, might be interesting.

    Dan

    Star in Badge

thats totally the point (the one you have missed i mean) it cannot be identified as a champions league/ european cup win, it is a standard position for such a star, like a badge of rank is always in the same place – it has no significance in it current position.

You are clearly design illiterate !

    Mike

  17. RSamVillaFan 5 May 2011 at 7:01 pm #

First off, the design as it stands is like the team at the moment….average at best.
Bob,s idea of a stripe is an interesting one, maybe we’ll see if we can knock a few of our own designs up. Didn’t you have a go at that in the (ahem, cough, splutter) Damien days, Dan?
Incidentally even if the design is approved soon, we probably won’t get it till November again!!!
Like Nan says, i dont care if they play in romper suits, as long as they win!

    • Dan 5 May 2011 at 8:21 pm #

i don’t recall having a crack at shirt design myself, but i may have done.

my tastes are very simple though; i’d like to see an all claret shirt, thick blue trim around sleeve cuffs, blue collar & blue nike swoosh plus our badge. that’s it. (or maybe an umbro badge if poss ;) )

actually, for the sleeve trim, i like what nike have done with the new french nation team shirt where it can be rolled up to pull a contrasting colour inside out, or left down for no trim.

for the away shirt; white, or an off-white, with exactly the same trim, but in claret.

third shirt? reverse of the home; blue with claret trim.

      very, very simple.

trouble is, it’s too simple. you can’t keep banging that out every year and hanging a fifty quid price tag on it!

and as for nan, i missed his quip up there, but i’ve a feeling he’d pay to see them in gimp suits win, lose or draw! ;)

  18. notsosilentbob 5 May 2011 at 10:44 pm #

We talk about the kit design but i think we are all missing one major thing here…

We need to get the word PREPARED off our badge.
(im sorry to keep banging on about it.)

  19. notsosilentbob 5 May 2011 at 10:45 pm #

    or at least add

    UN-….to it.
