David Moyes has been a favourite among fans for the Aston Villa job from the moment Martin O’Neill quit. Long before that in many cases truth be told.

He’s also been a hot favourite with the bookies; they even had to close the book on him at one point last year. That was after Bob Bradley had been the favourite for a spell as I recall. You know, just sayin’.

That episode at least forced Moyes to address rumours and he was pretty concise:

1. David Moyes – Aug 11th 2010
I am loyal to Everton, I’ve always said that. It is a really good club and this year we have a really good team and we have a good chance of doing well.

The season was literally just about to kick off, he wasn’t likely to say anything else. So attention turned elsewhere, reluctantly, and eventually Gerard Houllier’s name cropped up. Within days he was confirmed as the new manager.

January

But by January life wasn’t exactly rainbows and lollipops for either manager; fans were calling for Houllier’s head, rumours circulated that Moyes would quit struggling Everton. Inevitably two was added to two and chatter linked Moyes to Villa, but he again poured cold water on the rumours:

2. David Moyes – Jan 5th 2011
I wouldn’t walk away. I have been here eight years and made Europe four or five times. We’ve had dodgy spells and come through so you hope everyone keeps believing.

Nobody knows how bad I feel the team is not in the position I think it should be. Nobody is putting in more hours than me. All I can do is keep putting all my energies into getting us away from this position.

As we know, if it were a question of Randy Lerner backing or sacking Houllier in January, he most certainly backed him. And then some! It paid off too.

April

Events took another twist in April though when Houllier was admitted to hospital suffering chest pains which would later be confirmed as a dissection of the descending aorta; very similar to problem that almost killed him when he was at Liverpool.

Speculation about his future flowed around the internet in typically classy fashion and David Moyes was once again linked. An old hat by now, he swatted the rumours away with 25 words:

3. David Moyes – April 29th 2011
It is nothing to do with me. I am at a great club and have got a great job. I don’t know what to say.

That didn’t even register though and he remained the favourite among the fans and with the bookmakers. Well, they know how to make a quid or two; the house always wins.

June

And then today, for reasons unknown, he’s again addressed persistent rumours in a dismissive way:

4. David Moyes – June 1st 2011
I want to have a club, though, where I can give the supporters something, I really do. I want a good fresh challenge when we come back next summer and hopefully that will be the case.

It may just be me, but this is actually the weakest of denials, but it’s effectively also the fourth. I’m not sure what he said immediately before this quote, but all the outlets are using the preceding quote from April 29th. The use of the word ‘though’ within the first sentence suggests there was something said relating to this quote, but it’s been omitted for some reason.

You’re now wearing your tinfoil hat, aren’t you?

Nevertheless, despite the contents of the article not really matching the headline – just for a change – this final quote was below a heading that read “Everton FC manager David Moyes not interested in Aston Villa job” so this time the message is being received.

Well, to a point. It’s interesting what you can achieve with a headline. Put that same quote under the headline of “Moyes refuses to commit future to Everton” – something we Villa fans should be pretty familiar with – and you’d soon work up a foamy rumour-lather.

However, I’m not trying to make a case that David Moyes is in the running for the Aston Villa job, I just find it amusing that he’s persistently been the favourite, but is the only one who’s even been close to ruling himself out.

I’ll save my personal view on Moyes for another post, but for now let’s just say that I’m not exactly in the David Moyes appreciation cult. I’m not anti-Moyes in any sense, I just don’t see him walking on water any time soon. In any case, until we’re officially told differently, Gerard Houllier is still the manager of Aston Villa.

A whisper on the street claims that confirmation is delayed by “negotiations” over Houllier’s compensation. If so, I don’t sense much mutuality in the decision to call it a day, but we covered that yesterday.

EDIT: It was just pointed out to me that “today’s” quote – i.e. the “fourth denial” – is actually a recycled quote from May. Chances are, then, that it really does belong with the April 29th quote and was just omitted at the time.

Again, it just serves as example of how these things can be spun by the press. As I already said, that quote could just as easily have been headlined with “Moyes refuses to commit future to Everton“. You know, if the headline writer wanted to, like.

So, it’s actually just the three “denials” then, but the thrust of the post stands.

Sorry mate but you’re clutching at straws as this is just a re-hash of an interview made at the end of the season some weeks ago. I am an Evertonian and as far as I am concerned if he does decide to leave the you are quite welcome to him.

He is tactically inept and the most negative manager in the Premiership. It is because of his awful style of play (HOOOOFFFF !!)and dour defensive attitude to big games against the top teams that I gave up my season ticket last season,a season ticket I had held since 1996

Moyes to Villa….I will be the one cheering the loudest.

    • leon 1 June 2011 at 4:08 pm #

      fuck off nelly.
from relegation candidates every season to a top 4 finish and europe more times than not.
if he didn’t come in when he did where would we be?
call yourself a supporter? had a season ticket since 96? wowee.
how would anyone else have done on a shoestring? why dont you piss off and support liverpool, you will fit in you gobshite.

nelly i 2 am a everton season ticket holder and surely you cant think the football played under moyes is worse than the stuff under mike walker or walter smith? Moyes has his limitation thats for sure but he has turned are club round from relegation fodder into a team that not so long ago was the best of the rest. its only lack of investment holding us back not moyes. May 21st:

“But I’m not interested anyway, so that answers it.”

    But apparently that doesn’t count.

    • Dan 1 June 2011 at 4:42 pm #

no, it absolutely counts! i’d just forgotten about that one, it would have been in otherwise, trust me.

i appreciate the comments here from evertonians, but it looks like most, if not all, have missed the point of this post. i.e. moyes has said consistently that he’s not interested in coming to villa and a large section of villa fans are hard of hearing.

as i alluded to in the post; i’m not drinking the moyes koolaid. if he does come to VP, okay. if not, that’s fine too. it’s all very ‘meh’ for me.

  3. Nelly Blythe 1 June 2011 at 4:16 pm #

Leon….you’re a buffoon….just because I don’t think Moyes is a great manager doesn’t make me a red shite. It’s because of people like you…people who class mediocrity as success that Everton will never progress beyond their present position any time in the near future. FYI I’m not the only one who thinks Moyes style of football is fuckin dire…read the forums there are thousands of us you cretin.

You may think finishing 7th is a great success I would prefer to judge success by winning trophies…bet you think Kenwright is a great chairman too eh…

    • leon 1 June 2011 at 6:02 pm #

nelly is a kopite in disguise.
how can anyone think moyes is shit. where were we before he came and where are we now? if he was so shite would villa even be after him? or would fergie say he would like him to be his successor? maybe you know more than them? what is it you do for a living? cos it sure as fuck can’t be anything to do with football haha
if you dont think going from just avoiding relegation every season to qualifying for europe regularly is an improvement you are a fuck-wit!
he’s had no money, all the money has come from selling players you negative moron.
he hasnt had the backing of the board financially, simple as.

  4. Nelly Blythe 1 June 2011 at 4:23 pm #

Graeme… what the fuck is ‘best of the rest’…….Best of the best is the only title worth having….another example of someone who is willing to accept mediocrity as success…Best of the rest FFS..By your own admission ‘best of the rest’ (hahaha) was a littel while ago so are you implying that the team is now going backwards….

  5. Jinksy 1 June 2011 at 4:26 pm #

Nelly – I agree with you pal Moyes isn’t what Villa need. We need Carlo Ancelotti a proven winner. Moyes has never won anything and spent a hell of a lot more money than people think.

Come on Randy get Carlo make a statement of intent!!!!!

  6. Stu 1 June 2011 at 4:27 pm #

I think Nelly needs to head back over to Toffeeweb with the rest of the moaners!

Moyes has worked miracles with no money at Everton!

  7. Graeme Edwards 1 June 2011 at 4:31 pm #

IDIOT. U sound like a bloody kopite lad. You need 2 be realistic without heavy financal backing were never going to compete at the very top. Yes i will admit we have gone backwards in the last two years but thats more to more teams having bigger budgets than moyes. its sad really that u were prepared 2 wacth all the tripe in the lates 90s and when we actually have a decent team u give up ur season ticket

  8. Nelly Blythe 1 June 2011 at 4:33 pm #

Moyes spent £10 million on the shite that is Bilyaletdinov….don’t say he’s not had money…He’s also spent £15 million…£12 million…£8 million….on individual players…to my reckoning that’s at least £45 million….not to mention the sums in single million figures…don’t say he’s not had money…

You can slag me all you like but you’ll be very sorry when you’re watching hoofball every week…

    • leon 1 June 2011 at 6:07 pm #

£15m on fellaini who is world fucking class you idiot. hes worth at least double that now.
how many bad buys has moyes made??? i bet you cant even name 5. compare that with other managers and those idiots accross the park and you will see he’s quality.
i bet you only ever have sex cos it gives you something else to moan about…..

      • leon 1 June 2011 at 6:10 pm #

for every bad buy he has made i bet i can name 3 good ones.
ones whos value is a hell of a lot more than their purchase value.

  9. Jinksy 1 June 2011 at 4:33 pm #

Stu1 – He’s spent millions and won nothing!!!!

  10. Latchford9 1 June 2011 at 4:36 pm #

Nelly you sound like a moaning old woman. Moyes is magic.

  11. Graeme Edwards 1 June 2011 at 4:41 pm #

Hes spent whats hes recoup on palayer sales dont kid yourselfs its anything else moyes net spend at everton is bout 4million a season. hardly the millions citeh, chelsea, man utd ,the shite or even villa spend

  12. jack 1 June 2011 at 4:45 pm #

delusional Villa fans…, you got a laugh. moyes had a chance to come to you when you had a decent team and werent going to lose further players now youre a mid table relegation team , he is going to run the other way.. and i tell you what else makes me laugh.. the pure amount of toffees outnumbering you villa on a villa site…. he he
any way i hope you do manage to stay up as we always need the 3/6 points.

    • SOTC 1 June 2011 at 5:00 pm #

Jack – tee hee, you’ve taken 4 points from Villa in the past 6 meetings in the PL

  13. Nelly Blythe 1 June 2011 at 4:46 pm #

Why am I a kopite just cos I dont subscribe to the Moyes is Great mantra…seems to me that you’re ok with the fact that we’re going BACKWARDS…yes this is a decent squad with (in the main decent players) that’s why I expect…no DEMAND a decent style of play not the HOOFBALL shite that has been served up by Moyes over the last few seasons…He did actually have us within a sniff of winning a trophy on 3 occassions (Carling Cup v Chelsea, UEFA v Fiorentina & FA CUP v Chelsea) and fuckin bottled it every time by playing defensively and hoping not to get beat NOT trying to win..
Smith & Walker had shite teams…this one isn’t shite it just doesn’t play attractive football and shit’s itself everytime we play a big game….apart from Chelsea in the FA CUP this season( on pens) Moyes has NEVER beaten a top side (i.e. Man Utd, Arsenal,Chelsea or The Shite) away from home…he hardly ever beats them at home for fucks sake…How can he be considered a great manager when he has never won a trophy FFS

  14. villa legend 1 June 2011 at 4:55 pm #

why are all these everton fans giving grief to the villa, they have hardly been much better than villa this season, and to be honest i cant understand why villa are so keen on david moyes as manager. moyes is in a comfort zone with everton and thats the way he wants to stay good riddance, i would much rather have mark hughes or carlo ancellotti managers with passion unlike that miserable scot david moyes, everton you are most welcome to keep him

    vtid
    sotc

  15. Hairy Phil 1 June 2011 at 4:57 pm #

    Nelly you bad fucking belter.

Your anger at Moyes manifests itself because of you being deeply unhappy and unconfident in the real world. You need to be angry about something and anything. All these opinions that you wouldnt say in any boozer in L4 as youd get knocked out for being a tit lad.

    Youre another internet shithouse. Kopite.

Sorry to the Villa fans for doing this crap on your board. Good luck with your new manager and season.

  16. Graeme Edwards 1 June 2011 at 4:58 pm #

did i say he was a great manager? hes done a great job for us and if you cant see that you must be very short sighted maybe you think hes taken us as fare as he can but i personally think he desreves the respect of all evertonains because we could easily have been the next sheffield wednesday b4 he took us over. U say walker and smith had shite teams so moyes inherited a shite team and on a shoe string budget got us into europe how many times? Yeah hes a shockin manager nelly!!!

  17. Nelly Blythe 1 June 2011 at 5:15 pm #

Hairy Phil…fuck off you NEANDRATHAL PRICK..
FYI I am VERY HAPPY & CONFIDENT in the real world…a world where being best of the rest means fuck all…

Graeme not shocking but by no means GOOD/GREAT whatever you want to call it…

Anyway I’m fuckin board now with all you short sigthed Evertonians who think mediocrity is success…here’s to WINNING FUCK ALL again next season….goodbye

    • Hairy Phil 1 June 2011 at 5:22 pm #

Support Chelsea then you fucking nobhound.

  18. Hairy Phil 1 June 2011 at 5:21 pm #

Again im sorry for the villa fans having to read this shit. We have lot of bellends who follow us like this. I hope you get someone decent in (but not Moyes!) which im sure you will as youre a proper club.

  19. Dixie 1 June 2011 at 7:07 pm #

    I’m with Hairy Phil.

Villa fans, I really think there is absolutely no chance of you getting Moyes. That’s the feeling from the majority of Evertonians on Merseyside; the only club Evertonians fear losing Moyes to is Man Utd. Knowing the character of Moyes, he’s not going to walk out. He’s not like a Bruce or a Hughes who seemingly change jobs at will. He actually enjoys the concept of building a side; he values continuity and he has a genuine affinity for Everton – he’s been with us for 9 years after all. With all due respect, Villa are a good club, but with the very best will in the world, at the very most Villa would be a sideways move, and that’s me trying my upmost not to be biased. Based on recent years, Everton are clearly better placed than Villa, inspite of our inferior finances.

A lot is made of our finances, but we do have the best Academy team in the country coming through, several of whom are virtual locks to be first team squad members in a few years time. That alone will save us money. Everton finished 7th last season. We were pretty close to Liverpool and not far off Spurs. Could Villa finish above these two teams and do any better than Everton? Perhaps, but it’s not a certainty, which is why Moyes isn’t interested. Money has never been that much of a deal breaker to Moyes, because if it had been, he’d have resigned years ago like O’Neill did for you lot.

  20. Dixie 1 June 2011 at 7:16 pm #

Nelly, you are a complete idiot.

So Moyes hardly beats ‘a top side’ at home does he?

    - Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool and Spurs all beaten at home this past season.
    - Clawed back a 3-3 with Man Utd despite entering injury time 1-3 down.
    - Beat Man City away.
    - Beat Chelsea away on penalties.
    - Draws away (in the league) with Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs.

2 years ago we beat Liverpool, Villa and Man Utd (the latter at Wembley in a FA Cup Semi Final) all in the FA Cup. None of those were big games were they?

Honestly lad, you’re talking so much untrue shit it is embarrassing. Give up lad, you’re making a total prat of yourself.

  21. Matt Damon 1 June 2011 at 8:58 pm #

Villa have debts of £140million and are losing £30million a season.

There’s ZERO chance he’d go to Aston Villa. You’re skint.

  22. b44 villa 1 June 2011 at 11:25 pm #

matt damon just one thing villa in no debt!!!! sign on sign on wiv a pen in ur hand and ur never work again, u shud support liverpool mate

    • leon 2 June 2011 at 10:49 am #

b44 villa, i think its you who probably signs on, cos no fucker would give you a job with spelling and punctuation like a 4 year old.

go away leon your not welcome on our site!

        • leon 2 June 2011 at 11:00 pm #

its you’re not your your fucking retard.

  23. avillan 2 June 2011 at 12:12 pm #

Cant wait to see moyes taking villa into the championsleague next season. Our chairman has said that because this time around they have more time to choose a manager than last season that they will make sure they get the man they need regardless of whether they’re employed or not and because he backs us very well in the transfer windows and with buying state of the art training facilities and doing up villa park e.t.c. then i cant see moyes declining tbh.

i mean we have a better ground, better training facilities, first class youth teams for the future and we have bucket loads of money to spend and lots of fans.

cannot wait to see all the everton fans sulking because they realise that they are nothing without moyes and will probably get relegated with an average net spend of 4 million a season.

    now get off our site!

  24. Graeme Edwards 2 June 2011 at 1:01 pm #

avillian u cant seriously believe bodymour heath has better facilites than finch farm?

    • avillan 2 June 2011 at 1:12 pm #

our chairman has recently spent like 8 million i think it was on redeveloping our training ground and therefore it is one of if not the best training facilities in the premierleague so yes i would say with no doubt that bodymoor heath has much better facilities than everton. no offense LOL

      • avillan 2 June 2011 at 1:17 pm #

scratch that id never seen finch farm and didnt realise how good it actually was lol my bad (just looked it up and was overwhelmed) anyway we can still compete with it with our state of the art training facilities although admittedly ours is not as gd but otherwise everything else i have sed is true

        • avillan 2 June 2011 at 1:30 pm #

tbh ive changed my mind ours is still much better and i think ours cost 15 million not 8 million (which i previously said) lol but yeah theres no chance in hell that yours is better after assessing it lol

          • leon 2 June 2011 at 11:03 pm #

having been to both, finch farm is better than bodymoor.
bodymoor is good too. very good set up.
