Just over 21,000 saw Villa earn their place in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup the hard way thanks to a late goal each from Eric Lichaj (80′) and Nathan Delfouneso (88′) from the bench.
It’s a game I’ve yet to see anything from first hand, but it sounds like we dominated the game pretty much in the manner you’d expect over a struggling League Two side, but were frustrated by some fine goalkeeping from 20 year old loanee, David Cornell.
Barry Bannan was man of the match, Stephen Ireland missed a couple of sitters, but did provide is credited with the assist for Delfouneso’s headed goal (Edit: We’re informed in the comments below that it was actually Weimann who set up the opportunity). Everyone apart from Brad Guzan and Jean II Makoun had a crack at goal at some point. Cornell made eight saves.
It might have been more encouraging to have made it past Hereford with a little more ease, but cup games always have the potential to go this way and the important thing is that we’re in the hat for the next round.
Starting XI: Guzan, Herd (Beye 87′), Lichaj, Dunne, Clark, Ireland, Makoun, Bannan, Albrighton, N’Zogbia (Delfouneso 58′), Bent (Weimann 72′). Unused Subs: Marshall, Baker, Lowry, Hogg.

It was actually Weimann that headed the ball back to Delf. To be fair Weiman changed the game. Full of endeavour, backing into defenders, roughing them up and turning in behind them. We lacked that cutting edge up today. N’Zogbia and Albrighton were frustratingly inconsistent.
thanks for the info; weimann’s received some excellent reviews for his brief cameo.
encouraging. he was just starting to make an impact last season when his ankle got messed up in vienna. hopefully he’s about to pick up where he left off.
Games like this help the team grow though and you learn more from them. We’re still settling in after Eck’s arrival. Good result
with the way everything went last season, this was one of those games where the frustration of not being able to break the deadlock might have led to our undoing.
this season: A) they kept at it, avoiding silly lapses at the back. B) mcleish made changes when they were required. C) they got the result they deserved in the end. D) there was a healthy blend of young and old; it can only be a benefit for all of them to get experience playing together.
Glad to see Lichaj’s name on the score sheet — I actually cheeered at work when I saw it come across the screen.
A little disappointed that Albrighton seemed poor again. I have just read reviews from people who saw the game but Albri really seems to be hitting a sophmore slump.
lots of question marks over albrighton at the moment. it’s certainly easy enough to see why he’s not an automatic starter right now.
it will be interesting to see how it’s managed, but he’s definitely off the boil a little.
lichaj, weimann, delfouneso, bannan and even lowry are good enough to start games at villa now, especially the first 3,whether mcleish takes the gamble remains to be seen
