Five to go: Stoke next, three points for Gerard

It’s good news from the coronary ward of the Queen Elizabeth hospital: Gerard Houllier will not require any surgery, just rest and medication. It’s unlikely that we’ll see him in the dugout again this season though, so Gary McAllister will fill in as expected.

So, whether you wanted it or not, we will have a fourth person calling the shots from the sidelines this season. Fortunately, we’re more or less out of the woods and McAllister will just be supervising Houllier’s

Gerard Houllier hospitalised, McAllister to take charge against Stoke

I’m sure you’ll be aware by now that Gerard Houllier has unfortunately been admitted to hospital overnight and will remain there for a few days for tests. Gary McAllister will therefore take charge of first team affairs in his absence, including Stoke’s visit to Villa Park on Saturday.

It would be irresponsible, even crass, to speculate on the nature of Gerard’s hospitalisation, we all know his history, I’d prefer instead to wish him the speediest of recoveries and look forward to

What’s the difference between Houllier’s and O’Neill’s first 25 league games?

There’s a lot of emotion, anger and fear floating around the Villasphere at the moment so I’m going to tread carefully here. I’m not looking to make any particular point, but I do want to correct one or two claims I’m seeing which are factually inaccurate.

Facts are what I do, I’ll leave the opinion to you the reader.

The question in the headline might draw a multitude of answers, and possibly some less than savoury language, but I’m talking in terms

Factfile: New Aston Villa signing Jean Makoun

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Jean Makoun from Lyon for a fee thought to be in the region of €6m* possibly rising by a further €3m depending on performances. The 27 year old brings a wealth of experience with almost 250 Ligue 1 appearance, more than 50 European appearances and 56 caps for Cameroon including four African Nations Championships and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He’s a robust and competitive defensive midfielder, not dissimilar to Nigel Reo-Coker,

The R Word, a study: Part III, it was twenty years ago today

Part two was an exploration of Gerard Houllier’s first 14 Premier League games in comparison with Dr Jo’s first 14 games in charge of Aston Villa back in 1990. Mainly because their record over the 14 games was so similar, despite Houllier’s program being considerably more challenging, but also because our position after 19 games is exactly the same today as it was 20 years ago.

Ian made the point in the comments that the table around us is not

The R Word, a study: Part II, Gerard Houllier vs Dr Jo

As starts go, Gerard Houllier has made a particularly bad one with Aston Villa; winning just 13 points from his first 14 league games, fuelling the fire with a number of clumsy PR gaffes, a growing army of fans calling for his head.

In part one, we looked at Villa’s history of dealing with the threat of relegation and here in part two we’ll make a direct comparison between Houllier and Jozef Venglos who oversaw a terrible season at Villa Park,

The R Word, a study: Part I, some recent history

We finished 6th in the Premier League last season for the 3rd season running; apparently evidence of stagnation for a significant proportion of fans. The fact is, and forgive me for repeating this once again, Aston Villa hadn’t achieved three top six finishes on the bounce in the top flight since 1933.

Hopefully it won’t be another 77 years until we can taste such putrid stagnation, but right now you’d be forgiven for thinking it feels that way. Those three

Man City 4 Aston Villa 0: Another beating to close out 2010, now stick or twist for 2011?

Well there you go, another dire game, another awful result to put 2010 to bed. The anti-Houllier voices now reaching full crescendo; maybe they’ll get their wish and we can look forward to our 4th manager in a matter of months. That’s generally worked out well for clubs that have tried it in the past.

I hate to single him out, but Eric Lichaj had a shocking opening eight minutes – nothing seemed to work for him – capped with

Some clarification on Brad Friedel and an Ashley Young prediction

I believe the pre-match press conference ahead of the Boxing Day game against Tottenham is taking place today, so brace yourself for cherry picked Houllier quotes to filter out over the next few days, sending people predisposed to fly in rages into those very rages.

He said WHAT?!?!? ARRRGHHHHH!!!

Oh, wait. I see. Well that makes sense I suppose. Okay, carry on.

I’m not entirely sure where the quotes on Brad Friedel came from yesterday, but they also look
