Major player permanent transfers into and out of Aston Villa since August 2006 shown in chronological order by season.
Reported transfer fees can vary significantly and are becoming increasingly difficult to know in any way at all. The figures used here should therefore be considered “best guess” and are generally based on the most persistently reported fees until more accurate information is discovered. The figures should also represent the capitalised amount and do not include any loan fees or “add-ons”.
Notes are included at the foot of the page where an explanation is relevant.

A note on released players
Each summer a number of players’ contracts expire and in the absence of an offer of renewal will be “released”. The dates shown below indicate when that list was published, not necessarily when the player left the club; some players may already have found themselves a new club by that point. Contracts generally expire at the end of June.

John Carew arrived at Aston Villa in a straight swap deal, Milan Baros headed to Lyon in exchange.
Curtis Davies joined Aston Villa on 31st July 2007, but his first season was actually a loan; the full transfer from West Brom the following year is shown above with a fee of £8m. Higher amounts are often attributed to this transaction, but it’s assumed that loan fees for the first season may well be included.
Stephen Ireland was a makeweight in the deal taking James Milner to Man City. The transfer values shown above are the valuations agreed by the two clubs; the actual transaction saw just the net £18m change hands and the two players swap clubs.
Darren Bent joined Aston Villa for £18m with add-ons rising to £24m.
Jean II Makoun joined Olymiacos on 29th August 2011 on a season long loan with an option to purchase. The financial details are believed to include a £1.5m fee during 2011/12 (including wages) with the option to buy set at £3m at the end of the season.
* Makoun joined Rennes on a season long loan deal for the 2012/13 season, again with an option to buy at the end of the season which the French club exercised. Details of the deal haven’t emerged so an estimate of the fee based on the player’s residual value has been included.
Brett Holman‘s contract was cancelled by mutual consent.
* Norwich were awarded £450,000 compensation for Jed Steer by the Professional Football Compensation Committee in January 2014.
Scott Sinclair joined Aston Villa on 30th January 2015 initially on loan for the remainder of the season with a permanent deal on offer contingent on Villa securing Premier League status. A four-year deal was confirmed on 19th May, this was future dated on this page for 1st July to commence the following season.
Nicklas Helenius had one year remaining on his contract when it was cancelled by mutual consent, allowing him to rejoin Aalborg permanently after spending the 2014/15 season there on loan.
Antonio Luna cancelled his contract by mutual consent with a year remaining.
Philippe Senderos‘s contract was cancelled by mutual consent with six months remaining.
José Ángel Crespo joined PAOK for “a nominal fee”. We’ve gone with his residual book value of £365k since we’re talking about relatively low amounts so it won’t be far away.
Brad Guzan had been offered a new contract towards the end of the 2011/12 season, but hadn’t accepted by the time his contract expired at the end of June. Incoming manager, Paul Lambert, persuaded Guzan to re-sign with the club in July. Though he wasn’t technically released in the true sense, there was a gap between terms and has been treated on this page like a new signing as a free agent.
Jonathan Kodjia joined Aston Villa for £11m, potentially rising to £15m. Bristol City also retained a sell-on clause for a share of any future profits.
* Jordan Ayew joined Swansea for a fee rising to £5m with Neil Taylor coming to Villa in part-exchange.
Scott Hogan‘s transfer from Brentford was reported as £9m rising to £12m with add-ons.
