Ashley Young and Darren Bent get the goals for England plus other international news

Ashley Young and Darren Bent scored both goals for England in a 2-1 victory over Denmark in Copenhagen tonight. It capped a pretty decent performance from England despite conceding an early Daniel Agger goal.

It was Ash’s first goal for England, winning his 12th cap, and Bent’s 2nd goal in what was amazingly only his 8th appearance for the national side. I think they’ll be in Capello’s plans again next time.

Bent played the full 90 minutes and might have scored more,

It’s Notts County or Man City in the FA Cup 5th Round

Edin Dzeko’s late equaliser earned Man City a replay at Eastlands which ought to ensure their place in the 5th round of the FA Cup, meaning that’s where we’ll almost certainly be heading. It wasn’t the re-match with the Blues many fans feared or hoped for, but it’s far from ideal.

I suppose there is still the chance that Notts County could beat City, but it’s slim.

FA Cup 5th round draw in full:

Fulham or Tottenham v Bolton or Wigan
Man Utd v

Some thoughts on the Bent transfer, irony, Villa on the defence and Weimann heads out on loan

When you drop a club record £18m on a player during any window, but especially in January, there will inevitably be a lot of opinions voiced and a few feathers ruffled. I’ve read a lot of ill-conceived nonsense that I won’t dignify by linking to, but it’s fair to say that outside of Villa circles the reaction has been decidedly mixed.

For example, watching the opinion rolling by my screen on Twitter, I happened to spot a Man City fan scoffing

Psst, I’ve got a little secret: Aston Villa have submitted a huge bid for Darren Bent

OK, I’m kidding, it’s pretty far from a secret. In fact it’s everywhere and I must be the last person to find out. Ironically, I checked all the latest news just minutes before this one broke and then went off the grid. I came back and all hell is breaking loose!

This is a story that will evolve as the day goes on so I’ll continue to update this post as we learn more, but at the moment it would appear

It’s got to be done: January transfer round up

It’s been an interesting, yet quiet week for me. I’m really not a fan of the transfer window periods, there’s so much nonsense being regurgitated. Some of it by people who don’t know any better, but mostly by people who know full well that they’re peddling baseless speculation in search of traffic.

However, the new air of openness at Villa Park under Gerard Houllier is refreshing and perhaps the glimpse of the work behind the scenes we’ve been given helps temper

Brad Guzan joining Hull City on loan and Omar Cummings trains at Bodymoor

USA Today are reporting via the AP that Brad Guzan has joined Hull City on a one month loan deal. It’s a great move for Brad, a brilliant opportunity to get some first team action under his belt and he may well be playing as early as tomorrow against Leicester after Vito Mannone returned to Arsenal.

It does, of course, raise intriguing questions about the goalkeeping situation at Villa Park as the transfer window is about to open, Brad Friedel’s

Ash won’t be let go easily, Sidwell possibly heading for West Ham

Villa will not be letting Ashley Young head for the exit door in January and, if he doesn’t re-consider signing a new contract, the club may be willing to let him run down his contract and leave on a free in 2012. The thinking being that another season with Ash in the team is worth more than any potential transfer fee, but that would depend entirely on how committed he is.

In the mean time, Houllier is hopeful that Ash

Pires signs for six months, Delph in America and Bannan’s MON problem

It’s a breaking news type of thing; Robert Pires has passed his medical at Bodymoor and has signed a six month contract which takes him through to the end of the season. Carlos Cuellar tweeted earlier today that he’d met Pires at Bodymoor, he looked fit and they talked in Spanish – Pires was at Villarreal for four years of course.

I’m looking forward to seeing Bobby in action, not sure exactly where he’ll fit in, but as I keep
