Pretty sad news this. After a fair amount of speculation about his future, the club have confirmed what many have long suspected; they will not be extending Freddie Bouma’s contract when it expires in June and he is free to talk to other clubs about a free transfer in the Summer. I assume this is one of those “mutual consent” things.

What a season it’s been. The senior side made it to the Carling Cup final and FA Cup semi-final. The reserves won the southern league title, but lost the play-off final against their northern counterparts, Man Utd, at Old Trafford. And tonight the academy side lost to Chelsea in the second leg of the FA Youth Cup final in front of 12,500 mostly Blues fans at Stamford Bridge.
Close, but no cigar at every level this season.

Refusing to give up hope for fourth place as long as it remained possible, but knowing we weren’t favourites, the question of who I’d prefer take that place if we could not has been at the back of my mind for a little while now. I’ve made no secret of my disdain for City’s “throw money at the problem” approach to breaching the barrier of 5th place, so it may seem like a no brainer to favour Tottenham.

Regardless of what happens in our remaining two games; Man City and Blackburn, Aston Villa’s performance over the course of the 2009/10 season will be at least the 2nd best in the 18 year life of the Premier League. It will make no difference how you choose to compare the records from each season, only 1992/93 can rank higher.
