There’s so many positives that we can extract from this game, it’s difficult to know where to start. OK, well it’s the result, obviously. You have to go back to August 1995 for the last time we beat Man Utd in the league and back again to November 1983 for the last time it happened at Old Trafford.
Naturally the highlight from the game is Gabby’s 21st minute goal, but MON’s men were true to the gaffer’s word and

I sometimes think there’s something of a bubble around the Premiership that fans need to poke their heads out of now and again. In fact, that bubble probably envelopes all of English football, but mostly the Premiership.
We obviously all recognise that on a European level, on the pitch at least, the main competition for English clubs comes from Spain and Italy, and to a lesser degree, Germany and France. I may have spoken about this before, but when

Last night I noticed a Tweet pop up from another Aston Villa blog which featured a headline along the lines of “Carew off to Turkey?” and I have to admit it irritated me. It irked me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the rumour mongering regarding John Carew has become a bone of contention with me and I’ve written several posts quoting both player and manager, hopefully painting a picture of content.
I first jumped on the opportunity to

Hopefully by now you’ve seen the three goals from this game and if so, I’m willing to bet that you enjoyed the slightly unusual nature of all of them. Richard Dunne thumped Villa into the lead with a very non-central defender like shot that ricocheted in off the underside of the cross bar from about 8 or 9 yards. Just as impressive was the pass James Milner fed the Irishman in acres of space under cries of “shoot”

When I did the first of these Player of the Month blog posts I set the rules that players had to play in all the Premiership matches that month in order to be eligible, but I was concerned that might be a bit harsh. I was trying to stop someone playing only a single, maybe a couple of games, getting some freak rating and topping the table unfairly.
However, in August and September there were only 3 Premiership fixtures each

It only seems like yesterday that I hit the publish button here at Aston Villa Central for the first time, but in fact it was a year ago today!! Yup, it’s AVC’s first birthday!! Wow, they grow up so fast, don’t they?
Technically speaking, I was only fleshing out a little content during December last year while I worked on the early design. I didn’t open the site up to search engines until January, but the first day

The draw for the Carling Cup semi-finals has just been made and Aston Villa have been drawn against the winner from the Blackburn vs Chelsea game. That game was a 2-2 stalemate after full time, but Blackburn are currently 3-2 up in extra time. [Update] Chelsea equalised in the final minute of extra time, but Blackburn won a dramatic penalty shoot out to set up the Semi-Final against Villa.
I believe Villa will play the second leg at Villa Park

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited about the potential attacking force of the four players above and I’m optimistic that we’re going to see this foursome regularly celebrating scoring in front of cheering fans.
Stewart Downing, as the newest player, is the biggest unknown, but he looked good as a provider in his brief cameo at the end of the game at Burnley. He put in an impressive performance for the reserves before scoring on his full

This might sound like lame self promotion, but it’s the absolute truth. The Villa Wire really is a great tool to get a quick snapshot of the current Aston Villa news, but you’ll also see the odd gem show up in the feed from Flickr. We don’t get as many Aston Villa pictures as I’d like, but it’s still worth keeping an eye on.
A while little wile ago I stumbled on this old picture of Trevor Ford and
