Blackpool have lost their last five games, Ian Holloway will be desperate to avoid a sixth straight defeat. He’ll have half an eye over the horizon to his next game against Tottenham, perhaps hoping that Wolves might offer an opportunity for points after that. And then Chelsea will come to town.
By the time Holloway takes his men to Ewood Park, inside the final seven games of the season, he knows full well that his team could be in the midst

I’m sick of the sight of Blackburn Rovers. We’ve played them eight times in the last two years; four times in the cups, four times in the Premier League. Villa have a 100% record in the cups, but Blackburn have won the last three league meetings.
It’s the 4th round of the FA Cup, form largely goes out the window, but for what it’s worth, Villa are obviously riding high on back to back league wins for the first time this

Five days ago, I wasn’t much looking forward to Saturday, but how quickly things can change; all it took was £24m! Seriously though, it’s amazing what a boost the acquisition of Darren Bent has provided. To everyone, fans and players alike it would seem; Gabby, Ash & James Collins all waxing lyrical about Bent joining the team.
It’s also given Gerard Houllier a massive boost in the eyes of many fans who were doubting him, but ultimately it will still come

A great deal of confidence was undoubtedly restored at Stamford Bridge and our slide toward oblivion apparently halted. At least for a while. Tonight, with Sunderland coming to Villa Park, we’ll see whether there’s enough fire burning in this team to launch an ascent back up the table.
The CEO’s backed the manager, the assistant manager has backed the team, now it’s up to the players to show that they really do care.
Results last night weren’t the most favourable

I don’t know what to make of Wigan Athletic, they’re something of a Jekyll and Hyde team. I’ve all the time in the world for Roberto Martinez, he definitely knows his potatoes, but results and performances frequently betray the fact that he’s the youngest manager in the league.
Watching Wigan at home this season, the first thing that will strike the casual observer is the number of empty seats in the DW Stadium; they’re the worst supported team in the

I may have spotted a Baggies fan or two playfully suggesting that their team could be responsible for the sacking of two Premier League managers in a week. I don’t think a loss would automatically lead there, but it would increase the pressure on Houllier exponentially. Beyond breaking point? Not quite, but close I’d imagine.
The good news is that this game is at home, all away fixtures leave me with a sense of foreboding these days.
I think we

We were in 16th place when we travelled to Anfield last year amidst much doom and gloom and yet we came away with all three points after a hugely satisfying 3-1 victory. We return to Liverpool on Monday night once again in 16th place, and Liverpool in 11th to their 10th last time, but this time Villa have 15 league games behind them, not one.
We haven’t occupied this lowly a league position at this time of year since we

Local derby, 120th competitive meeting as it happens. Cup game. Mid-week. Under the floodlights. Only a fool would try to predict the outcome of one these; all bets are off and anything can happen. McLeish has called for a hostile atmosphere and described the reputation of the City fans as being “volatile but not in a nasty way”, whatever that might mean.
Meanwhile, Gérard Houllier has appealed for calm: “It’s a game which is on TV, and it’s a derby,

Arsenal are a curious side right now, frequently, as far as I can determine, a victim of their own complacency. 2-0 up against Tottenham by half time at the Emirates last Saturday and they somehow conspired to take their foot off the gas to the point they seemed helpless to respond to Spurs’ resurgence and rightly ended up with nothing.
The fans and manager alike, apparently, stunned and without an explanation of where it all went wrong.
They rocked up in Braga
