Villa’s Fitness Woes And der Hammer

Not the greatest of shocks, it was looking dicey 10 days ago, but it’s been confirmed that James Collins and Carlos Cueller will not be available for the season opener against West Ham on Saturday. As far as I know, Richard Dunne came through Ireland’s 1-0 loss to Argentina unscathed and there should be no issue with Ciaran Clark.

Curtis Davies and Gabby Agbonlahor are both back in training and there’s some optimism that they will be available. Ashley

Guadiana Cup Preview

I watched the opening game of the 2010 Guadiana Cup last night between hosts Benfica and Feyenoord which finished in a very entertaining 4-1 victory for the Portuguese side. They also followed that up with a 5-4 victory in a penalty shoot out.

Feyenoord opened the scoring just 3 minutes into the match with a breakaway goal that broke the offside trap laid by the extremely high Benfica backline and left a relatively simple finish one-on-one with Roberto in goal.

Throwing Stones In Glass Houses

Man City recently visited The Emirates with the clear primary intention of avoiding defeat, their cause largely assisted by an Arsenal side devoid of much interest in winning themselves. Mancini’s thinking could not have been more clearly stated; take a point against Arsenal, then win the points they need for fourth from Villa and Tottenham. Cheeky bugger if you ask me, but he’s technically correct since both games happen to be “six pointers”. He’s got to pull

Passion / Spirit / Desire / Jubilation / Determination

20th April 2008, Villa Park. A brace each from Ash and Carew topped with a 5th from Gabby. What a day. Some great, great moments. From the goals, to Carew and the ball boy, to Ollie pumping his fists with unbridled joy in the 85th minute. I think that look on his face will be etched in my mind forever!!

Just over two years later and they’re back…

…hopefully for more of the same!!

UTV!!

I’d love to give these

Greater Than The Sum Of Its Parts

It’s probably entirely fair that the majority of the sane football world regard Barcelona as the best team on the planet at the moment and Lionel Messi as the world’s best player. Inter Milan were the under dogs for last night’s Champions League semi final and whilst Barcelona aren’t massively superior on a man-for-man basis, it was also fair to describe them as the favourites.

But a funny thing happened; Barcelona lost 3-1.

That’s not what is intriguing me and causing

Six To Go Starting With Everton Tonight

Martin O’Neill has talked about needing to win the next 6 games to have a chance of finishing in the top 4. He’s probably right. That’s clearly the intention within the camp: Carlos Cuellar most recent updates on Twitter and Facebook talked about tonight being the first of our “cup finals” to get to the top four. That’s pretty encouraging, at least for me.

I suppose the only downside with that mentality is that the instant they fail

FA Cup – Aston Villa vs Chelsea – Matchday Build Up and Live Blog

I’m doing something a little different with this today. Any of the news links that crops up between now and kick off will appear here on the first page, with the latest at the top. The live blog will be embedded on the second page (there’s also a link at the bottom of the page) so you don’t have to load that up if that’s not what you’re here for.

Once again, the live blog will be mostly fed
