Liverpool Would Be The Big Winners If Pompey Go Under

I’m just checking Rafa’s Wikipedia page to see whether he has any background in accounting as this might have been what he had in mind when he guaranteed that Liverpool would finished in the top four. We all know how close Portsmouth are to total collapse. Today I saw a suggestion of what might happen if they go out of business and it’s not great news for us, but it would be a disaster for Arsenal and the two teams from Manchester.
Basically, if Portsmouth die mid-season, the Premiership would obviously be reduced to 19 teams and only the bottom 2 would be relegated to the Championship. Equally obvious, I think, is that Portsmouth’s results would be removed from the record, meaning anyone who took points from them would lose those points.
Bad news for Arsenal, Utd & City who have all played Pompey twice and taken 6 points, but fantastic news for Liverpool who actually lost 2-0 at Fratton Park!!
Here’s how the top 8 currently shape up:-
Current | Pld | GD | Pts | |
1 | Chelsea | 27 | 41 | 61 |
2 | Manchester United | 27 | 39 | 57 |
3 | Arsenal | 27 | 33 | 55 |
4 | Manchester City | 25 | 15 | 45 |
5 | Liverpool | 26 | 16 | 44 |
6 | Tottenham Hotspur | 26 | 19 | 43 |
7 | Aston Villa | 25 | 13 | 42 |
8 | Everton | 26 | 1 | 38 |
And here’s how it would look if we removed the results against Portsmouth today:-
w/out Pompey | Pld | GD | Pts | |
1 | Chelsea | 26 | 40 | 58 |
2 | Manchester United | 25 | 31 | 51 |
3 | Arsenal | 25 | 27 | 49 |
4 | Liverpool | 25 | 18 | 44 |
5 | Tottenham Hotspur | 25 | 18 | 40 |
6 | Manchester City | 23 | 12 | 39 |
7 | Aston Villa | 24 | 11 | 39 |
8 | Everton | 25 | 0 | 35 |
I think it’s time we started a whip-round to save Pompey!!
