AVC Player of the Month – November

When I did the first of these Player of the Month blog posts I set the rules that players had to play in all the Premiership matches that month in order to be eligible, but I was concerned that might be a bit harsh. I was trying to stop someone playing only a single, maybe a couple of games, getting some freak rating and topping the table unfairly.

However, in August and September there were only 3 Premiership fixtures each

Aston Villa 3 Hull City 0

Aston Villa coasted to a 3-0 victory over Hull at Villa Park this after with goals from Richard Dunne & James Milner to re-take fifth place in the Premiership.

I wasn’t able to watch this game live, so I’ll be brief, but I’ll do a more in depth review, probably with a statshack, once I see the game in full later this evening.

Richard Dunne opened the score with a shot from about 8 yards out supplied by Milner following a corner.

Hey Shorty, It’s Your Birthday

It only seems like yesterday that I hit the publish button here at Aston Villa Central for the first time, but in fact it was a year ago today!! Yup, it’s AVC’s first birthday!! Wow, they grow up so fast, don’t they?

Technically speaking, I was only fleshing out a little content during December last year while I worked on the early design. I didn’t open the site up to search engines until January, but the first day

Carling Cup Semi Final Draw

The draw for the Carling Cup semi-finals has just been made and Aston Villa have been drawn against the winner from the Blackburn vs Chelsea game. That game was a 2-2 stalemate after full time, but Blackburn are currently 3-2 up in extra time. [Update] Chelsea equalised in the final minute of extra time, but Blackburn won a dramatic penalty shoot out to set up the Semi-Final against Villa.

I believe Villa will play the second leg at Villa Park

Something I Think Villa Fans Should Get Used To Seeing

I don’t know about you, but I’m pretty excited about the potential attacking force of the four players above and I’m optimistic that we’re going to see this foursome regularly celebrating scoring in front of cheering fans.

Stewart Downing, as the newest player, is the biggest unknown, but he looked good as a provider in his brief cameo at the end of the game at Burnley. He put in an impressive performance for the reserves before scoring on his full

Portsmouth 2 Aston Villa 4 – Carling Cup – Review

Aston Villa eased into their first League Cup semi-final since losing 5-4 over two legs to Bolton back in January 2004 by scoring 5 of the 6 goals in the 4 – 2 win at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth took the lead after 10 minutes when Stan Petrov’s sliced clearance from a corner flew in at the near post past the helpless Brad Guzan. Emile Heskey justified his inclusion in the starting XI by restoring the status quo 2

Gameday Post – Portsmouth vs Aston Villa

I’m not going to restart writing previews for games, but today I will kill time between now and kick off with one or two random things that’s catching my attention with a ‘live thread’ feel.  I’ll chuck in any relevant match news if and when it surfaces and probably some thoughts during the game as it may well be a case of listening to the free commentary on the radio.

Firstly, I noticed that the countdown timer in the sidebar was

Trevor Ford Picture

This might sound like lame self promotion, but it’s the absolute truth. The Villa Wire really is a great tool to get a quick snapshot of the current Aston Villa news, but you’ll also see the odd gem show up in the feed from Flickr. We don’t get as many Aston Villa pictures as I’d like, but it’s still worth keeping an eye on.

A while little wile ago I stumbled on this old picture of Trevor Ford and

Payments To Agents Disclosed

I believe that as part of tougher financial rules imposed on Premiership football clubs in the interests of transparency that payments to agents now have to be disclosed. I first spotted this story earlier on Newcastle’s website where they explained that the figures may include “payments made by the Club on behalf of players”, whatever that might mean. As the news seems to be breaking across the board, I’m assuming that we’ve reached some deadline to report the
