A predictably tight affair was statistically edged by Villa. Perhaps Everton will be the more satisfied with the draw, they’ll certainly have less complaints about being reduced to 10 men. Ironically, Everton could actually appeal Bilyaletdinov’s early bath as he received a straight red card while Carlos Cuellar was harshly shown a second yellow card late on, but dismissals resulting from two bookings cannot be appealed. Yeah, that’s fair, isn’t it?

Playing at Villa Park would have been better, but never look a gift horse in the mouth. Carling Cup Quarter Final draw…
Blackburn v Chelsea
Manchester City v Arsenal
Manchester United v Tottenham
Portsmouth v Aston Villa

Chronological – i.e. compare the first 10 games this season with the first 10 last season, regardless of opponent.
Apple for Apples – compare identical fixtures from last season, regardless of when they occurred. Since 3 teams are relegated and 3 promoted each year this isn’t possible across all 19 opponents so I’ve made the following

Aston Villa had to battle back from a goal down to share the points with Everton at Goodison Park in a game that was few on chances, but sprung into life in the final minutes with both sides reduced to 10 men.
Villa created perhaps the better chances of the first half, although Everton edged the possession. Nevertheless, Everton would consider themselves somewhat fortunate to take the lead on the stroke of half time when a ball lobbed into the

Wow!! It took a penalty shoot out to settle this one, but Aston Villa will be in the next round of the Carling Cup after beating Sunderland 3 -1 from the spot. Brad Guzan has emerged as an absolute super hero after not only saving 3 penalties during the shoot out, but also one in the 85th minute and also made a number of crucial saves during the game! An unbelievable performance!!
