Portsmouth 2 Aston Villa 4 – Carling Cup – Review
Written by Dan on December 1, 2009
Aston Villa eased into their first League Cup semi-final since losing 5-4 over two legs to Bolton back in January 2004 by scoring 5 of the 6 goals in the 4 – 2 win at Fratton Park.
Portsmouth took the lead after 10 minutes when Stan Petrov’s sliced clearance from a corner flew in at the near post past the helpless Brad Guzan. Emile Heskey justified his inclusion in the starting XI by restoring the status quo 2 minutes later with a sweet right footed shot from about 12 yards out.
Milner moved Villa into the lead with a 27th minute blasted shot from the left channel into the lower right of goal. Although Pompey had a chance or two, Villa mostly controlled the rest of the half with 5 shots, 3 of them on target.
Stewart Downing, making his full debut, looked to have booked Villa’s place in the semi-finals with a headed finish to Ash’s centre on 67 minutes. However, with 3 minutes of regular play left on the clock substitute Kanu tried to set up a nervous finish by getting one back for the home side.
Before Villa fans had chance to begin chewing the finger nails Ashley Young restored the two goal lead with a deflected shot set up by Gabby Agbonlahor with a minute of normal play left.
MON brought on Nathan Delfouneso for Emile Heskey to see out the clock, but the victory was all but assured.
We’ll wait to see who we’ll be drawn against, but Man Utd are currently 2-0 up on Tottenham at home and who would be surprised if they turn out to be our opponents in the final round before a trip to Wembley?
Well done to all the lads and the 3,000 fans who made the trip down to the south coast, they seem to have really played well tonight and the Ashley Young, James Milner, Stewart Downing combination is looking a very tasty prospect!!
