Goal analysis: More goals from the “wrong” side

Since the analysis of Gabby’s goal at Blackpool was well received, I thought I’d repeat the task for the goals against Blackburn yesterday. This time the solid orange lines represent player movements without the ball, the dashed orange lines indicate movement with the ball (dribbling) and the blue lines show the path of the ball between players (passes).

Goal One: Build up to the penalty

With the opening goal coming from the spot, there’s obviously nothing to look at with the goal

Ashley Young and Darren Bent get the goals for England plus other international news

Ashley Young and Darren Bent scored both goals for England in a 2-1 victory over Denmark in Copenhagen tonight. It capped a pretty decent performance from England despite conceding an early Daniel Agger goal.

It was Ash’s first goal for England, winning his 12th cap, and Bent’s 2nd goal in what was amazingly only his 8th appearance for the national side. I think they’ll be in Capello’s plans again next time.

Bent played the full 90 minutes and might have scored more,

Some clarification on Brad Friedel and an Ashley Young prediction

I believe the pre-match press conference ahead of the Boxing Day game against Tottenham is taking place today, so brace yourself for cherry picked Houllier quotes to filter out over the next few days, sending people predisposed to fly in rages into those very rages.

He said WHAT?!?!? ARRRGHHHHH!!!

Oh, wait. I see. Well that makes sense I suppose. Okay, carry on.

I’m not entirely sure where the quotes on Brad Friedel came from yesterday, but they also look

Ash won’t be let go easily, Sidwell possibly heading for West Ham

Villa will not be letting Ashley Young head for the exit door in January and, if he doesn’t re-consider signing a new contract, the club may be willing to let him run down his contract and leave on a free in 2012. The thinking being that another season with Ash in the team is worth more than any potential transfer fee, but that would depend entirely on how committed he is.

In the mean time, Houllier is hopeful that Ash

Fulham 1 Aston Villa 1 – Positives can be drawn from last second draw

Brede Hangeland grabbed a point for Fulham at Craven Cottage with what was literally the last touch of what has been christened the “FxPro Derby”, nodding in a free kick at the far post in the 4th minute of injury time. That threatens to overshadow an awful lot of positives from a Villa side featuring two youngsters making their first starts in the Premier League.

Let’s address those positives first. Nathan Delfouneso, getting his first start thanks to being

Ashley Young insists he has no intention of leaving Aston Villa

I’ve been waiting for this interview to be published all day! Ashley Young sat down with The Sun today as part of promotional activity for VMF and has assured fans that he is committed to Aston Villa, despite putting contract negotiations on ice.

Ashley Young
All I’m doing is concentrating on my football. I don’t want to be distracted by anything else. I’ve not said I’m leaving and I’m not taking my focus off football.

The fans have been brilliant

Soap operas, Ian Holloway, Ashley Young, Sunderland and whatever

It’s been a reasonably quiet week on the Villa front so I elected to make a rare foray into the realms of off-the-field antics at another club, mainly to get to the little nugget about Sir Alex not fancying Villa Park because of Deadly, but I suppose the Rooney story was the story and worthy of a mention.

Football’s resembling a cheap Mexican soap opera more and more every day. Frankly, I was never a soap opera type and it

A tale of two debuts and a note on hypocrisy

I watched, or attempted to watch, three games of football yesterday and didn’t see any goals. Perhaps it was fortunate that I was unable to see the England Under 21s a little earlier in the day, but congratulations to them for securing their place in next year’s European Championships in Denmark with a goalless draw in Romania.

Given his age and talent, it’s remarkable that Ashley Young was making a debut of sorts as last night was his first start

Video: Ashley Young’s England press conference, Albrighton returns to Villa

Ash was handed press conference duties in the England camp today and spoke about his desire to cement a place in the national side and his enjoyment playing in his new, more central role at Villa.

In other England news, the Under 21 squad have just touched down in Romania minus Marc Albrighton who has returned to Villa for treatment to an unspecified injury.
