NotW Doesn’t Know About Andy Marshall

Just a quick note to the “journalists” at the News of the World – if you’re going to make something up, please just do some basic, rudimentary research first.

Today they’re claiming that Aston Villa are about to make a “shock move” for Wigan’s back up goalkeeper, Mike Pollitt, as cover for the two Brads. In fact, it’s only a short piece, I’ll quote it in full:-

ASTON VILLA are considering a shock move for veteran Wigan keeper Mike Pollitt.

From Sky Sports – Gardner Fee Agreed With City

Sky Sports are reporting that Aston Villa and Birmingham City have a agreed a fee for Craig Gardner to make the switch across the city and it sounds like it’s just a formality of medical and agreeing terms next week.  I know there’s a lot of fans who rate Craig highly and won’t want to see him leave, especially to go to them.

However, like Gary Cahill before him, Craig wants to play first team football and is several places down

Strong Financial Stewardship Sets Aston Villa Up For The Future

Proud History, Bright Future.

A tag line, PR spin, just a bit of marketing guff perhaps, but it’s a simple little sentence that strikes the right chord with most Villa fans.  I’ve always liked it and it sums up Aston Villa at the moment as well as any four words possibly could.  I’m really talking about Aston Villa under the management of Martin O’Neill and, more specifically, the ownership of Randy Lerner.

When it comes to team management it’s frequently speculated that

One Little Cup Final And The Transfer Speculation Reignites

Actually, I don’t know if there’s really any connection, but just days after Martin O’Neill has said he’s not looking to sell or buy and then later pretty much admitted that if he did want to buy, he’d have to first sell, we have a couple of pieces of speculation floating around today.

This morning all the talk was of Glasgow Rangers’ Kris Boyd “being in talks” with Aston Villa, which the club later distanced themselves from a little, although they’ve

Aston Villa 6 Blackburn Rovers 4 (Agg. 7 – 4)

They did it!! Aston Villa have booked their first cup final appearance since the FA Cup back in 2000!!!

Villa being Villa, they didn’t do it the easy way. What drama at Villa Park tonight… who would have predicted TEN goals?? Certainly not this blogger. At least the fans at VP got their money’s worth tonight.

Villa got

The Key To Scoring Goals Again Is Patience

Martin O’Neill has set the bar pretty high for himself.  Around this time last year I was able to proudly proclaim our best ever Premiership season at that stage with 41 points from 21 games.  I also predicted that we wouldn’t trail off during the remainder of the season, so the least said about that the better I think.  I’m due to update the comparison of this season versus last season series shortly, so I won’t get into that here,

Statshack – Aston Villa 0 West Ham 0

I’m sure it’s something that is, and will be, looked at back at Bodymoor, but surely the fact that goals from set pieces are apparently drying up has to be an area of concern right now. We had 16 corners in this game and won 9 free kicks inside the West Ham half which I’m pretty certain all were used to either shoot directly at goal or at least deliver the ball into the box.

Throughout the game we had

James Milner Might Be Great, Craig Gardner Might Be Off

I recently asked whether Martin O’Neill was a great manager, or greatest and a few people contacted me to suggest that I was ahead of myself a little and he hasn’t really achieved the title “great” yet. Yet.

That’s a fair point. A touch of semantics aside, it was obvious that a large slice of subjectivity would influence any debate, so ultimately greatness, it would seem, is in the eye of the beholder.

With this in mind, I enjoyed Phil McNulty’s

Game Day Open Thread – Blackburn vs Aston Villa

Finally, we’re going to get so see some Aston Villa today. FINALLY!! This will be a blog post which I’ll just update bits and pieces throughout the day as we head towards kick off tonight at Ewood Park. It seems like forever since we last had a game, which incidentally was Blackburn at Villa Park on January 2nd. Just in case you couldn’t remember.

One little story that’s bouncing around the Twittersphere as I write surrounds Nathan Delfouneso‘s stated
