Statshack – Aston Villa 1 Man City 1

Better late than never.

One thing that struck me early on during this game was the focus on the attack down the left channel. I’m not talking about simply looking for Ash on every pass, but both Gabby and Carew working the left side of the pitch. In fact, if anything, Ash played a lot deeper than usual. I put a screen shot of the average position map up at half time which really shows this effect.

There was

Picture Of The Week – Pancho Villa

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty and, without wanting to get political, “suspicion of conspiracy to rob” sounds a bit like a thought crime to me, nevertheless, I’ll just leave this here…

Correcting A Silly Error

I made a bit of a n00b error yesterday with a post referencing classic Greek mythology that unfortunately is synonymous these days with bad ju-ju happening to your computer.

Because of that it’s possible the URL is getting hijacked and re-directed to a site that shows this scary warning sign.

Hopefully it should go without saying that this website is entirely clean of such crap. The website showing you the warning most certainly is not!! I would strongly advise not

Gabby In, Ash Out

Gabby Agbonlahor’s recent run of form has been recognised by Fabio Capello and is included in the England squad to face Ukraine and Belarus.

James Milner and Emile Heskey are also in the squad, but there’s no place for Ashley Young.

Follow Up: Leveraging The Media

Curtis Davies’ agent, Phil Sproson, has recently been running to the papers in order to push on his client’s contract negotiations. As I speculated, Martin O’Neill isn’t overly impressed with this being aired in public. Go on Martin, you tell him:-

I always thought that it was private information with a contract but if the agent of a player chooses to divulge them then that’s entirely up to them.

I don’t really want to bring this into the public domain,

Credit Where It’s Due

It was another Europa League night without Aston Villa tonight. I know, I know, I should be over it by now.

I’ve just finished watching a fine, battling performance by Rapid Vienna at Celtic Park earning a 1-1 draw. Although Celtic certainly went at the visitors, especially in the second half, in fairness it was a defensive error from Rapid that allowed the hosts to get back on level terms.

This Rapid Vienna side comfortably beat current top of Bundesliga

Leveraging The Media

Football agents don’t have the greatest of reputations, although it may well be a case of a few rotten apples, etc, etc. I particularly don’t like agents running to the papers with stories before or during contract negotiations in order to leverage their client’s position.

Today it’s Curtis Davies’ agent complaining about the club sticking to an agreement, a clause if you like, in the player’s current contract. From the way Martin O’Neill has been speaking recently, I suspect

AVC Player of the Month – September

At least 24 hours after a game I collect scores for the players’ performances voted on by fans. At the moment that comes from two sources; Sky Sports & The Telegraph, but as I use the average of these scores I can easily add new sources as and when I come across them.

The important thing is that these are scores directly from the fans, not the journalists. It also means that this is restricted to Premiership games for

Statshack – Blackburn 2 Aston Villa 1

I’m deliberately late with this post as I didn’t want to make it too easy to spot this game in the formation challenge.  In case you were wondering, it was (D).

You may notice that the formation shown in the average position map for this game probably more closely resembles a 4-4-1-1 with John Carew apparently in the deep striker role. As a recent commenter correctly pointed out, there will be factors that influence the average position, sometimes distorting the
