North Stand Work Starts This Year

Randy Lerner is conducting a press conference, as promised, right at this moment and Twitter is lit up with the owner’s confirmation that Martin O’Neill isn’t going anywhere. Since I never thought he was, this isn’t news to me. However, if you look hard enough there have been one or two interesting nuggets floating around which will emerge during the course of the day.

Randy has insisted that James Milner isn’t going anywhere either. Again, not news to me. He’s also said that there will be some money to spend in the summer – no figures of course – but the ambition remains. He has said that we will not be spending £30m on one player, but again, who really thought that we would? Or, who really wants to?

Additionally, Randy has said that some work will commence on the North Stand this year, initially just cosmetic, but with the aim to boost overall capacity to 50,000 within 3 years. The average attendance for Premiership matches at Villa Park during 2009/10 was 38,573, which is down 3% on 2008/09’s average of 39,812, which was also down on 2007/08. Hopefully there are plans in place to address this trend, there’s little point installing more seats if you can’t fill them.

Which begs the question of why we’re struggling to fill them when we’ve just had our best performance in the league for 17 years and also been treated to the first top 6 finishes 3 seasons running for 77 years.
