This Season vs Last Season #14

We’re about to flip the calendar from October to November which means that we’ve already reached the 10 game mark of the season and it’s time for the latest instalment of This Season vs Last Season.

The eagled-eyed among you, and/or followers on Twitter, may have already seen the chronological numbers on the new Season Rankr page. I’ve been updating the table after each game, sorting the records for all 56 top flight seasons since World War II at the same

This Season vs Last Season #13

With five league games gone, I’m afraid it’s time for the return of This Season vs Last Season – lucky number 13. The series was born during the 2009/10 season as dissenting voices towards Martin O’Neill’s stewardship grew louder and louder. Lots of comparisons were made to how many points we had at the same stage of the previous season, but comparing the fixtures on a like-for-like, or apples-to-apples, basis revealed that we were often doing better than the previous

I was planning on running this series every five games, but for one reason or another I didn’t get to it after the 25th game of the season; the 3-1 loss at Old Trafford. I really wish I had because now 26 games into the season, what I have to share isn’t pleasant.

After the 2-2 draw against Fulham at Villa Park we now have 29 points. Unfortunately, that’s our worst points haul from the first 26 games in the history

We’re now 20 games into 2010/11 so it’s time to compare this season with 2009/10 once again. As we’re only four points better off than the last post, the gap to last year, however you slice or dice it, has grown. After the first 20 games last year, we had 35 points and by comparing the same fixtures, apples for apples, we had 32 points compared to 21 points this year.

We’ve conceded twice as many goals than we

Unfortunately, it’s time to review this season’s performance against last season and it’s pretty grim. Last year I apparently ran the numbers after 14 games so that I could arrive neatly at 19, the half way mark, but I think I’ll stick with every five games for the rest of this season.

I won’t waste your time with narrative, the numbers speak for themselves. What I will add is that in games 16 – 20 last season we went

This Season Vs Last Season #09

We’re 10 games into the 2010/11 Premiership season, so it’s time to compare this season with last season both chronologically and using an apples-to-apples comparison, or as close as is practically possible. This is the 2nd in the series this year, you can see the first post, which was a snapshot after five games, here and you can also check the 2009/10 vs 2008/09 comparison after 10 games here.

Since the form over the last five games is WLDLD, you

I ran this as a regular feature last year and I don’t see any reason for it not to continue. I find it interesting at least. Same premise as before, which was explained in #01 if it’s not immediately obvious, the only change being the mapping of the three promoted and three relegated teams:-

Newcastle = Burnley
WBA = Hull
Portsmouth = Blackpool

That reflects their finishing positions in the respective leagues.

You’ll probably be aware that last season, after five games, we

This is the final part of the series comparing this season against last season both chronologically and using and apples to apples comparison. In case you missed it, I chose at the beginning to map the following 3 promoted teams to 3 relegated teams:-

Birmingham City = West Brom
Burnley = Middlesbrough
Wolves = Newcastle

I’m going to use the same tables and graphs from Part 6, but I just wanted to add some “big picture” perspective before we go on. We’ve

I’ve really been looking forward to getting to this one. 28 games played, 10 left to go.

If you’ve been keeping a concerned eye on the fact that we’ve been running a little behind last year’s performance points wise lately then you may well have failed to realise that we were approaching the point where the wheels fell off the wagon last year. To be more precise; around this time last year we lost 4 on the bounce (games
